Since 2005, Workman Communications has designed hundreds of security systems for commercial and residential partners. As a low voltage contractor, we receive this request quite often. Our latest security installation was for our partners at Twin Star Homes. Twin Star Homes specializes in home-enhancing living products and furniture. They supply two other tangent companies, TK Classics and Classic Accessories, with indoor and outdoor furniture and decorations. The company is in the process of moving to a new warehouse location in West Sacramento. To secure this new space, they called Workman Communications for the security system installation!
The plan of action
While accommodating Twin Star’s requests, our team was able to advise what kind of equipment and installation style best suited the space they have. This included the installation of a managed access system with (4) access controlled doors, (1) new alarm system with several types of alarm sensors, a new CCTV system with (8) IP-cameras, and wired the facility with multi-mode OM3 fiber optic cable. All of these improvements will help them keep track of inventory, increase ethernet speeds, prevent possible break-ins, and secure areas that were conventional “blind-spots.”
why we recommend these improvements
The new security system included (8) new 4k IP cameras, a monitor for viewing, and a network video recorder (NVR) for video storage. It was wired with multi-mode OM3 fiber cable for faster ethernet speeds and weather protection. Fiber optic cable is often advised for CCTV systems since it is resistant to chemical exposure, humidity, and temperature changes. Fiber optic cabling can carry data speeds over long distances, making it the ideal option for a warehouse space. An NVR was recommended because it can encrypt and process data at the camera. This data is then sent to the recorder for storage. Stored footage is secured in 4K resolution for later viewing.
This is considered to be an ideal option for CCTV systems because a digital video recorder (DVR) does not have an encryption process. A DVR is typically equipped to process data at the recorder instead of at the cameras. Unfortunately, this results in lower-quality playback video and requires a larger space capacity.
The new system with fiber optic cabling will give Twin Star peace of mind by securing 4K video footage, recording storage for up to two weeks, and protecting IP-cameras.
The access control system was installed next. These systems are highly desired since key fobs can be customized to grant employees access to some doors and not others. For bigger offices and warehouses, it allows administrators to track who comes in and out of high-value areas. This security design is critical for protecting sensitive information because it ensures access to selected employees. The Workman team programmed several Clamshell Proximity Cards and installed (4) access control card readers. This upgrade will secure general areas or offices to ensure that Twin Star products are monitored to the best ability.
Once this was complete, the alarm system was implemented. We recommended perimeter photo beams and 360-degree motion sensors to ensure a new level of reliability against false alarms. The photo beam perimeter utilizes infrared detection to act as an invisible ‘fence.’ When this fence is broken, it triggers the alarm siren. The 360-degree motion sensor, when mounted to the ceiling, captures all movement below it. It’s an ideal option for doorways so when an intruder enters the room, it immediately sounds the siren. Our team ran the wires and set (15) alarm trigger locations in the warehouse. (2) Photo beams were set around the perimeter, and (2) 360-degree motion sensors were installed in the office. To finish the alarm system, we installed (2) siren and (2) keypad that was programmed with a safety code for disarming the alarm.

As our team finished our final installations, Twin Star was ready to be given a tour of their new security system. Our Operations Supervisor demonstrated key features on their CCTV system such as how to retrieve recorded content and how to troubleshoot the cameras. They were given a run-down of the new access control, featuring how to add and remove users. Lastly, the alarm system was programmed with codes that Workman Communications stores and keeps confidential for future need. This information was shared with authorized users and they were given break-in protocols for potential situations.
